Welcome to the 2026 Noble Nose Boot Camp

The Noble Nose Boot Camp is a multi-day immersive training experience focused on odour understanding, handling strategy, and team confidence. Workshops combine theory and hands-on application to support teams working toward clearer searches and stronger decision-making.

Taking place in Fredericton, NB, at the Fredericton Inn,  a dedicated  crating room will be available for dogs between and during sessions, and a hotel room block has been secured for participants travelling in. Accommodation details will be provided by email.

Due to the limited number of working spots, participants are asked to wait for confirmation of their working position before submitting a deposit. Payment details will be shared once spots are confirmed.

Registration opens Monday, December 15, 2025 at 7:00 PM Atlantic time.

Full payment, cancellation, and transfer details are available in the FAQ below.

Cost: $150 Working (limited to 8); $80 Audit (unlimited)

A: Odour in Motion: Scent Theory, Flow, and Problem Odour

Delivered by Teeft K9

This workshop dives into how odour really moves in search areas and how dogs interpret those invisible scent pictures. Teams will explore airflow, temperature, vertical vs horizontal plumes, and problem scenarios like pooling, converging, lingering, residual, masking, overshadowing, contamination, and trapped odor.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand core scent theory and how environmental factors reshape odour plumes.
  • Recognize change of behaviour versus final indication as reflections of odour, not guesses.
  • Use hide placement to build confidence and clarity instead of confusion, especially in complex odour puzzles.

Level: Suitable for teams comfortable on odour. Working and auditor spots available.

B: Search Strategy & Line Craft: From Threshold to Finish

Delivered by Noble Nose Dogs

This hands‑on handling lab focuses on what the human does: walkthroughs, start‑line choices, search patterns, and line skills that set dogs up to succeed. Participants will practice choosing start points, managing thresholds, reading situational airflow, and applying systematic strategies for rooms, containers, and interiors.

Learning objectives:

  • Conduct an effective walkthrough and convert it into a clear search plan.
  • Improve lead handling, body position, and use of body pressure, including when to reverse search or detail.
  • Work high/low and inaccessible hides without crowding the dog or creating avoidable handling errors.

Level: For teams already trialing or preparing to trial; auditors welcome.

Saturday (PM)

Please note: Workshops run concurrently on Saturday and Sunday. Participants may choose one morning workshop and one afternoon workshop per day

Cost: $150 Working (limited to 8); $80 Audit (unlimited)

C: Reading the Dog, Reading Yourself: Communication, Motivation, and Stress

Delivered by Teeft K9

This workshop tackles the two‑way communication loop between dog and handler: how dogs read us, how we read them, and how stress and motivation shape performance. Teams will look at why dogs “cheat” (nose vs eyes), how handlers accidentally influence searches, and how to support both high‑drive and low‑drive dogs.

Learning objectives:

  • Identify how your dog is reading your body, voice, and emotional state, and how that affects searching.
  • Build sustainable motivation plans for both low‑drive and over‑aroused dogs, including reward strategies and “do I treat too much?”.
  • Develop practical tools for managing nerves, handling interruptions, and having a “what now?” plan when things go sideways.

Level: All levels; especially useful for handlers feeling “stuck” or stressed in training or trials.

D: Unknowns, Blanks, and Residual Odour: Calling It Clean

Delivered by Noble Nose Dogs

Blank areas and unknown number of hides demand solid handling and clear criteria. This workshop addresses how repeated searching can create false alerts, what your dog may be telling you in negatives, and how to handle residual odour without confusing the team.

Learning objectives:

  • Read the difference between “asking for help” and “there’s nothing here” behaviours in your dog.
  • Make clear decisions about when to reward, when to move on, and how to treat residual odour in training.
  • Reduce revisiting of old hides and build cleaner responses in blanks and unknown‑count searches.

Level: Best for teams already on odour and beginning to encounter blanks/unknowns.

Saturday (Evening)

Ask the Judge: Rules, Grey Areas, and “Blurt Alerts” (Judges’ Panel)

In this interactive evening panel, judges will discuss hot‑button competitor questions and the “why” behind what you see in the search. Topics could include known vs blind hides, containers (Filled? Empty? Why does that matter?), how close to source is “close enough,” moving/touching items, and the infamous “blurt alert.” Consider it an "Ask me Anything" session with SDDA judges.

Key takeaways:

  • Clearer understanding of when and how you can move or touch search objects and why rules exist as they do.
  • Insight into how judges view sourcing, fringe alerts, and how that should inform training.
  • Strategies for reconciling seemingly contradictory advice from judges and trainers in a way that serves your team.

Format: Panel Q&A with opportunity for pre‑submitted questions; may include short demo clips or run‑throughs.

Cost: $30

Light refreshments will be provided

Sunday (AM)

Please note: Workshops run concurrently on Saturday and Sunday. Participants may choose one morning workshop and one afternoon workshop per day

Cost: $150 Working (limited to 8); $80 Audit (unlimited)

E: Advanced Handling: Distractors, Detail Work, and Overarousal

Delivered by Teeft K9

This session tackles some of the most frustrating trial challenges: food/toy/environmental distractors, frantic searching, and over‑detailing. Working teams will practice balancing detail work with efficient coverage while maintaining clear indications and emotional stability.

Learning objectives:

  • Understand why distractors are so tempting and implement practical handling and training strategies to reduce their pull.
  • Slow and focus overdriven dogs without shutting them down, including for high/low and inaccessible hides.
  • Change or refine indications (e.g., active to passive) without eroding motivation or creating new problem behaviours.

Level: Advanced – Elite teams; auditors will see a variety of problem‑solving scenarios.

F: Designing Odour Puzzles: Hide Placement to Build Skills, Not Holes

Delivered by Noble Nose Dogs

Hide placement can either build understanding or accidentally install big gaps in your dog’s odour education. This workshop focuses on designing progressive odour puzzles that target specific skills like pooling odor, converging odor, elevation, and trapped odor.

Learning objectives:

  • Plan hide placements that deliberately train pooling, converging (horizontal and vertical), and trapped odor.
  • Distinguish when a problem is primarily an odour puzzle, a training design issue, or a hygiene/contamination problem.
  • Build stepwise setups that increase difficulty without rehearsing confusion, fringe alerts, or quitting.

Level: All levels, including experienced handlers, and anyone who sets hides regularly.

Sunday (PM)

Please note: Workshops run concurrently on Saturday and Sunday. Participants may choose one morning workshop and one afternoon workshop per day

Cost: $150 Working (limited to 8); $80 Audit (unlimited)

G: Mental Game & Trial Strategy: From Walkthrough to “Finish” Call

Delivered by Teeft K9

This workshop connects your handling choices and mental game from the moment you walk the search area to the moment you call “finish.” Participants will practice constructing search strategies, setting criteria for “area covered,” and managing nerves so better decisions survive trial pressure.

Learning objectives:

  • Build a repeatable plan for walkthrough, start line, and search progression, including pattern vs no‑pattern choices.
  • Develop clear internal rules for when to stay, when to move on, and when to call “finish” in unknown‑count and blank scenarios.
  • Apply mental management tools so you can execute your plan even when stress and surprises show up.

Level: Best for teams trialing or close to trial‑ready.

H: From Training to Trial: Mental Game, Debriefs, and Action Plans

Delivered by Noble Nose Dogs

This capstone‑style workshop turns past and future trial experiences into a concrete improvement plan. Handlers will learn structured debrief methods to analyze runs (real or simulated), identify root causes of issues, and decide what to change in training.

Learning objectives:

  • Use a practical debrief framework to pull useful information out of every trial or match run.
  • Translate common problems (dog returns to last hide, uncertainty in blanks, handler freezes, reward confusion) into specific training tasks.
  • Create an individualized “trial action plan” covering goals, warm‑up, reward rules, and post‑run review.

Level: Strongly recommended for any handler who has trial experience or plans to compete soon; auditors can fully participate in the planning and debrief exercises.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at info@noblenosedogs.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Registration opens on Monday at 7:00 PM Atlantic Time.

Participants will submit a registration form indicating their workshop selections and preferences.

All registrations are reviewed manually to ensure fair allocation of working spots.
Submitting a registration form does not guarantee a working spot. Confirmation emails will be sent once registrations are reviewed.

Yes. Workshops run concurrently in morning and afternoon time blocks.

Participants may select one working workshop per time block. Please review the schedule carefully before registering.

When registering, you will be asked to indicate what you would like to do if your first-choice workshop is full.

Options include:

  • being considered for an alternate workshop in the same time block
  • being placed on the wait list for your first choice
  • declining a working spot for that time block

Once a working spot in a time block is accepted, it is considered final, and any wait list position for that time block is released.

Working teams actively participate in the hands-on portions of the workshops with their dog.

Auditors observe, participate in discussions, and gain insight from watching a variety of teams work, but do not work a dog during the session.

If you’re unsure which workshops are the best fit, feel free to reach out before registering.

Working spots are allocated based on:

  • availability
  • registration order
  • the need to balance groups for effective instruction

Each participant may hold one working spot per time block.

Registration fees are paid in two instalments.

  • 50% of the total cost is due upon confirmation to secure your spot.
  • The remaining balance is due by March 15, 2026.

Accepted forms of payment include e-transfer, credit card and PayPal.

Payment instructions will be provided in your confirmation email.

No. The initial instalment is non-refundable.
This instalment secures your spot and covers advance planning, and venue costs.

If a participant cancels before March 15, 2026, no further payment will be required beyond the initial non-refundable instalment.

Cancellations received after March 15, 2026 are responsible for the full registration fee, regardless of attendance.

If a cancelled working spot is filled from the wait list, any payments received will be refunded minus a $50 administration fee.

Transfers may be permitted with prior approval.

All transfer requests are reviewed to ensure fairness to participants on the wait list. Where a wait list exists, those participants will be offered the spot before a transfer is approved.

Transfers must be requested no later than 30 days prior to the event.

An administration fee of $50 applies to approved transfers.

If the remaining balance is not received by March 15, 2026, the registration may be cancelled and the spot released to another participant. The initial instalment will be retained.

Yes. Wait lists will be maintained for workshops that reach capacity.

Participants will be contacted in order if spots become available.

Workshop changes are subject to availability and approval.

Changes cannot be guaranteed and may not be possible once workshops are full or closer to the event date.

The Boot Camp runs over multiple days and includes a combination of odour-focused sessions, handling labs, team and mental game workshops, and optional evening and capstone events.

On Saturday and Sunday, workshops run concurrently. Participants will choose one morning workshop and one afternoon workshop per day, for a total of four workshops across the weekend.

Each workshop has a recommended level listed in its description. Some sessions are open to all levels, while others are best suited to teams that are trialing or trial-ready. Auditors are welcome in all sessions unless otherwise noted.

If you’re unsure which workshops are the best fit, feel free to reach out before registering.

While we will make every effort to limit unnecessary exposure between dogs, participants should be aware that this is a group training environment. Dogs must be able to cope with the presence of other dogs in shared spaces.

Dogs should be able to:

  • work comfortably in new environments
  • be around other dogs and handlers without becoming overwhelmed or disruptive

If you are unsure whether this event is a good fit for you and your dog, please contact us before registering to discuss suitability.

We understand that four workshops over two days can be too much for most dogs. You can use the crate room to give your dog some "down" time outside of the working sessions, so that you can still participate by registering for an audit spot. This is also ideal for handlers with more than one dog, and want to use a working spot in the morning for one dog and the afternoon for the other dog. The crating room will also be available during the Games trial, as well as during the Saturday evening event.

Working spots are limited to 8 teams in each workshop to ensure quality instruction and appropriate rest for dogs. Due to these limits, working spots will be confirmed individually.

Please wait for confirmation of your working spot before submitting a deposit or payment.

Each working spot is limited to one dog per handler. If you are interested in attending with more than one dog, please contact us in advance to discuss options and availability.

The Boot Camp is held indoors.

Participants should bring:

  • A flat collar or harness
  • A standard leash (no retractables)
  • High-value rewards suitable for their dog
  • Crate, bedding, and water

Food is not included as part of the Boot Camp workshops. Participants should plan accordingly.

Light refreshments will be available during the Saturday evening Judges’ Panel.

The Judges’ Panel is an optional evening event featuring an interactive Q&A with judges. Topics include rules, grey areas, and common competitor questions. This session is open to Boot Camp participants and requires separate registration.

The Monday Mystery Capstone is a fun, themed scent search designed for dogs of all levels. It serves as a low-pressure, engaging wrap-up to the Boot Camp and is open only to participants who attended at least one workshop (working or audit). Separate registration is required.

Yes. A room block has been reserved at the host hotel for Boot Camp participants. Booking details and rates will be provided by email once registration opens.

If you have questions about workshop selection, suitability, or logistics, please contact info@noblenosedogs.com and we’ll be happy to help.
